At least 14 people lost their lives on Friday November 1 after the roof of a railway station collapsed in northern Serbia, according to CNN and other international media.
Serbia’s Interior Minister, Ivica Dačić, confirmed the updated death toll, noting that rescue operations were still ongoing in Novi Sad, located approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) northwest of the capital, Belgrade.
Local media reported that over 30 people were injured in the incident. According to a statement from the Interior Ministry, two survivors rescued from the debris received treatment in the hospital.
Dačić also mentioned that emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes of receiving the distress call. Nearly 80 rescuers were deployed to assist in the efforts.
Local residents gathered outside the station to light candles in memory of the victims. The Serbian government declared a day of mourning on Saturday.
