Three Italian firefighters were killed last Tuesday in an explosion in the northwestern region of Piedmont.
Sky TG24 reported that the firefighters were responding to a call about an explosion in an uninhabited farm building in the Alessandria province when a second, even stronger explosion occurred.
Prosecutor Enrico Cerci told reporters that a timer and a gas canister have been found in the rubble, which “makes us think that the explosion was deliberate.”
No motive could be found for setting off the explosion. However, the Italian news agency ANSA, quoted unidentified investigative sources claiming there were no reasons to believe there was any terrorist involvement.
Sky TG24 reported that the timer was remote-controlled, and that the owner of the farmhouse had been questioned by police. An adjacent farm building that was part of the complex was not damaged.
One of the dead firefighters was buried under the debris, and the body could be recovered after hours of digging.
Three other first responders were also injured.
