Indonesia landslide leaves villages buried and more than 80 people missing in West Java

en

A massive landslide in Indonesia’s West Java province has left entire villages buried under mud and debris, with at least eight people confirmed dead and more than 80 still missing, according to multiple international news outlets.

Rescue teams are racing against time as unstable soil, continued rainfall, and blocked access roads complicate the search for survivors.

A predawn landslide triggered by torrential rains swept through Pasir Langu village in the West Bandung region on Indonesia’s main island of Java. The slide buried homes, training camps, and farmland under deep layers of mud, rocks, and uprooted trees.

Authorities report that at least eight bodies have been recovered so far, while 82 people remain missing, many feared trapped beneath the debris.

Indonesian Marines Among the Missing

One of the most devastating revelations is that 19 members of Indonesia’s elite marine force were caught in the landslide while conducting training exercises on the slopes of Mount Burangrang. Their camp, along with 34 nearby houses, was swallowed by the collapsing mountainside.

The marines were preparing for a long‑duration border assignment when the disaster struck. Four marines are confirmed dead; the rest remain unaccounted for.

Search and Rescue: A Race Against Time

The search operation has expanded dramatically—from 500 personnel to more than 2,100—as rescuers dig through mud that in some areas reaches up to 8 meters (26 feet) deep.

Teams are using drones, excavators, water pumps, and in many cases their bare hands to reach possible survivors. But heavy rain continues to destabilize the terrain, raising fears of additional slope failures.

Villages Evacuated, Weather Warnings Issued

More than 230 residents living near the landslide zone have been evacuated to government shelters. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency has issued extreme weather warnings for the region, forecasting continued heavy rainfall and heightened landslide risk.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and evacuate immediately if they notice soil movement, rumbling sounds, or other warning signs.

A Region Prone to Disaster

Seasonal rains from October to April frequently trigger floods and landslides across Indonesia, an archipelago where millions live in mountainous or flood‑prone areas.

This latest disaster follows a series of deadly weather events across the country, including catastrophic floods and landslides in Sumatra in late 2025 that killed more than 1,200 people.
