CTIF and IEDO cooperate to create Best Practice Procedures for emergency drones

CTIF and the International Emergency Drone Organisation (IEDO) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding in order to cooperate and create standardized procedures for the use of drones in emergency services.
The agreement was made earlier in the Autumn of 2020, and the formal agreement between the two organisations were signed in a small ceremony online in December 2020. The agreement goes fully into effect this year, and will involve close cooperation not only with CTIF´s Executive Committee, but specifically as primary partnership with the CTIF Commission for Extrication and New Technology.
The purpose for IEDO is to develop & share knowledge: Drone tactical uses and technological tools need to be developed and shared through experts exchanges and testings.
- Promotion of the use of UAS by public safety agencies in all countries
- Development sharing experiences, feedbacks and information between emergency drone teams
- Improvement of emergency UAS pilot training level and safety
- Research and development, the testing of new technologies about drones
- Collaboration with international or European organizations about using drones during disasters.
Founded on June 10, 2018, the International Emergency Drone Organization (IEDO) is a global non-profit association dedicated to promoting the use of drones by emergency services and public safety agencies, but also to developing exchanges international, national and local among first responders using drone technology around the world.

IEDO has member organisations within firefighting, police, SAR volunteers and also doctors and paramedics.

"Drone technology is new and not used as frequently as it could be"

"IEDO volunteers promote drone users worldwide to help others worldwide to use drones for the common good of everyone. I am really excited to work with CTIF, the largest fire service organisation in the world, to further this goal", says IEDO president Vendelin Clique to CTIF News.
CTIF President Milan Dubravac says that he hopes "the exchange of knowledge and the increased use of drones in fire services and and other emergency organisations will benefit CTIF members in all of our 40 member countries and beyond".
The primary form of exchange between the two organisations will be within the context of the work of the CTIF Commission for Extrication and New Technology, chaired by Major Tom Van Esbroeck, who hopes that the signing of the MOU will be a new start of a great cooperation leading more and more users to discover the benefits of using drones.
"One of the issues is that this field is so new that it is almost unregulated and many don´t know where to start, or what is even allowed. We need to gather experiences from users worldwide so that we can create a set of operational standards for drones in emergency services", says Tom Van Esbroeck.
CTIF has a special set of criteria to determine CTIF Best Practice Procedures. So far, only the French fire services of the district of La Vienne has received the award for their work on standardizing rescue procedures on vehicles, regardless of energy propulsion type. One of the future outcomes of this new MOU could be to create a new set of Best Practice Procedures for Drones in Emergency Services.
