NEW YORK — A fast‑moving fire tore through an FDNY firehouse in the Bedford Park section of the Bronx early Friday March 27, injuring at least 14 firefighters and destroying a fire engine as crews inside were briefly trapped by advancing flames, officials said.
The fire in the fire station started just after 6 a.m. at FDNY Engine 79, Ladder 37, Battalion 27 on Briggs Avenue, burning through the roof and racing up the stairwell from the apparatus floor, according to the FDNY.
Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said firefighters on the second floor were unable to escape down the stairs and were forced to shelter in place, closing a door behind them until rescue teams reached them.
“They did exactly what we teach the public to do,” she said.
More than 160 firefighters and EMS personnel responded as the fire spread across the top two floors of the building. Fourteen firefighters suffered minor injuries, several of whom were transported to area hospitals for evaluation.
Officials said the fire originated on the first floor and extended to the apparatus bay, where Engine 79 became fully involved. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Residents across the street reported waking to smoke and sirens as flames broke through the station’s roof. New York City Emergency Management advised nearby households to keep windows closed due to drifting smoke.
FDNY leadership said the companies housed at the firehouse will be temporarily relocated while the building undergoes repairs, and fire coverage in the neighbourhood will be maintained.
