Several dead in Romania floods

Four people have died after the heavy rains that have hit Romania in recent days. Three people were swept by the rising water while a fourth died when a house was ravaged by the flood,  local authorities report.

The Covas region in the central parts of the country has been hit hard and hundreds of people have left their homes.

The floods affect about one hundred cities in Romania. Bridges and other infrastructure have been destroyed by the rising water.

Highways have been closed and hundreds are without electricity or gas. In one area, Slănic-Moldova, more than 300 farms were flooded.

“I did not know what to do. I simply grabbed everything that was valuable and called my neighbours to help,” a local woman said in tears.

The Romanian National Meteorological Administration has issued code orange warnings that warn of “high intensity” rains and water accumulation.
