Honolulu firefighter died in a roof collapse - Five other firefighters were seriously injured

On the evening of January 6, 2025, a 25-year-old firefighter from the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) tragically lost his life while responding to a two-story building fire. Four other firefighters were also  injured. 

The fire resulted in a partial roof collapse, which killed the the firefighter.  He had served with the department for 18 months. He was pronounced dead at Straub Benioff Hospital.

Four other firefighters sustained serious injuries and were treated at Queen’s Medical Center. Additionally, a civilian was hospitalized in serious condition. 

Honolulu Fire Chief Kalani Hao expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a tragic event for the department and the community. Mayor Rick Blangiardi also joined in extending condolences to the firefighter’s family and recognized the bravery of those who responded.

The incident underscores the dangers first responders face in the line of duty. The cause of the fire and the circumstances leading to the roof collapse are under investigation.
