Drone footage reveals vast destruction as wildfire tears through mountains of Castellón, Spain

The drone footage released by Spain’s Guardia Civil is striking because it finally shows, from above, the true scale of the wildfire that has been tearing through the mountains of Castellón, north of Valencia. 

What looks chaotic from the ground becomes, from the air, a vast and structured disaster: entire ridgelines glowing, valleys filled with smoke, and long fire fronts advancing in multiple directions at once.

Aerial images reveal the size and behaviour of the fire

The drone passes over Vall d’Uixó, where authorities lifted the shelter‑in‑place order on Tuesday. From above, you can see why the evacuation was necessary:

• flames running uphill in long, continuous lines
• pockets of active fire hidden beneath dense vegetation
• blackened slopes stretching for kilometres
• smoke columns rising high enough to disrupt visibility for aircraft

The footage shows firefighters working in steep terrain, dwarfed by the scale of the burn scar. Vehicles appear as small dots against a landscape that has been almost completely transformed.

207,000 hectares burned across Spain

The wildfire in Castellón is part of a much larger national crisis. According to Spanish emergency authorities, 207,000 hectares of land have already burned across Spain this season — one of the highest totals in recent years. Castellón’s fire is among the most destructive, driven by:

• strong winds from the Mediterranean
• extreme heat from repeated heatwaves
• very dry vegetation after months of drought

These conditions create fires that move quickly, jump containment lines, and generate their own convection, making aerial firefighting especially difficult.
