Dozens killed in flash floods in Morocco in December 2025

RABAT, Morocco — December 14, 2025 A sudden downpour turned deadly in Morocco’s Atlantic coastal city of Safi, where flash floods reportedly have killed at least 27 people and injured dozens more.

On Monday, fourteen people were still reported to be receiving medical care, including two in intensive care.

Flash floods, fuelled by heavy rains on Sunday, struck Morocco’s Atlantic coastal province of Safi—located about 330 kilometers (205 miles) south of the capital Rabat—according to a report from state-run 2M TV on Monday.

Just one hour of heavy rain was enough to destroy 70 homes and shops, sweep away cars, and cut off major roads in and around Safi, authorities communicated in a statement according to several media reports.

Videos shared on social media showed torrents of muddy water rushing through narrow streets, toppling bins and crates, and trapping residents inside buildings.

Morocco has faced long periods of drought, leaving reservoirs depleted and soils hardened—conditions that worsen flood risks when sudden rains arrive.

The deadly floods in Safi this week followed a tragic collapse of two residential buildings in Fez that killed 22 people. While Morocco has invested heavily in disaster risk reduction programs, enforcement of building codes and maintenance of drainage systems are reported to remain inconsistent across cities.
