15 dead in head-on bus collision in Kuwait

Fifteen workers at an oil company have died in a frontal collision between two buses in southern Kuwait. Another four workers were injured, some of them critical.

— Two buses packed with passengers slammed into one another Sunday, leaving at least 15 people dead and four others wounded, Kuwait Fire Service Directorate (KFSD) said. Four other people remain trapped in the vehicles following the collision, a KFSD statement revealed.

Two people and a Kuwaiti citizen were injured in the tragic accident that involved two buses on Al Artal road, located close to the seventh ring road, the KFSD added.

It was a head on collision, which resulted in the high number of casualties, the statement added.

Firefighters immediately rushed to the scene to rescue the injured. One of them was taken by an ambulance and the other was flown to a hospital.

The firefighters immediately launched a rescue operation to help four workers who were trapped in the wreckage of the mangled bus.

Meanwhile, Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) announced that the buses were transporting employees of contracting firms that work for the company when the crash occurred near Burgan oil field. In a statement to KUNA, KOC pointed out that medical emergency teams responded promptly to the incident, promising more details on the tragedy as they become available, reports Arab Times.

According to a spokesman for the civil service, the majority of the victims were Asian guest workers, employed by the private company Burgan Drilling.

Kuwait, like many other armed countries with major oil resources, has been criticized for poor working conditions and limited rights for foreign guest workers.
