Wildfire Peer Review Report handed over to Brandenburg authorities

en

In November 2024, for one week, the Bundesland of Brandenburg in Germany was the focal point of a wildfire-specific peer review, marking a milestone as the first regional review under the UCPM Peer Review Programme.

After more than six months of intensive work in close collaboration with the Brandenburg authorities, the report (ENDE) is now released.

The overall objective of the peer review, coordinated by the European Commission's Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), was aimed at enhancing Brandenburg’s wildfire governance and disaster risk management.

The peer team consisted of four senior experts from Portugal, Spain, and Italy, who were supported by DG ECHO and the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change (CMCC).

The report was handed over by DG ECHO Director-General Maciej Popowski to Dr. Sascha Dietel of Brandenburg’s Ministry of the Interior and Municipal Affairs, with commendations for the region’s voluntary participation and inter-agency cooperation.

🔍 Summary of the Key Findings:

  • Brandenburg’s wildfire risks are exacerbated by climate change, legacy land use, and governance challenges.
  • A staggering 292,000 hectares of forest contain unexploded ordnance (UXO), threatening safe management and firefighting.
  • Experts called for a unified wildfire strategy, better integration of prevention in forest plans, and a stronger support system for local authorities.

Plans to establish a Wildfire Competence Centre were welcomed as a way to boost coordination and expertise.

The final report will be reviewed further in October at a board meeting, where stakeholders will discuss future actions. Its findings are now publicly available in English and German on the Union Civil Protection Knowledge Network website.
