Super typhoon Ragasa leaves trail of destruction across Asia - 2 million evacuated in Kina

en

Super Typhoon Ragasa, the most powerful storm on Earth this year, has carved a path of devastation across the Philippines, Taiwan, and southern China, killing at least 21 people and displacing millions.

Packing sustained winds of up to 200 km/h and gusts reaching 250 km/h, Ragasa first struck the northern Philippines, triggering landslides and flash floods that claimed three lives and forced thousands to evacuate. In Taiwan, the storm’s outer bands caused a barrier lake to burst in Hualien County, unleashing a torrent of water that killed 14 and left 124 missing.

“It hit like a tsunami,” said a local postman in Guangfu Township, where homes and bridges were swept away. Rescue teams, including military personnel in armored carriers, have been distributing food and water to stranded residents.

As Ragasa moved toward China’s southern coast, authorities evacuated nearly 1.9 million people in Guangdong province. In Hong Kong, waves taller than lampposts crashed into promenades, flooding hotels and shattering glass entrances. Flights were canceled, schools closed, and emergency shelters filled with displaced residents.

The storm has also sparked political unrest in the Philippines, where tens of thousands rallied in Manila to protest corruption in flood-control projects. The so-called “Trillion Peso March” demanded accountability for billions lost to mismanaged infrastructure, as flood survivors voiced frustration over repeated failures to protect vulnerable communities.

Meteorologists warn that Ragasa’s intensity reflects a troubling trend in climate-driven superstorms

“This is not just a weather event—it’s a test of our resilience,” said Jim Foerster, a contributor to Forbes.

As cleanup begins, governments across the region face mounting pressure to improve disaster preparedness and infrastructure integrity. The full economic toll of Ragasa is still being assessed, but early estimates suggest billions in damages.
