France deploys special arson investigation task force as deliberate fires spread across southern Europe

en

PARIS — French authorities have arrested over 100 people on suspicion of deliberately starting wildfires this summer, as Europe faces one of its most extreme and destructive fire seasons on record. Interior officials say the arrests span multiple departments, including Gironde, Pyrénées‑Orientales, Ardèche, Var, and Haute‑Corse, where investigators report a sharp rise in human‑caused ignitions.

Half of this summers' wildfires started by human activity

France’s fire‑risk agency notes that record heatwaves, prolonged drought, and high fuel loads have created conditions where even small ignitions — accidental or deliberate — can escalate into major incidents. Prosecutors say motives among suspects range from reckless behavior to intentional arson, with several cases involving repeat offenders already known to police.

Officials warn that more than half of France’s 2026 wildfires are believed to be linked to human activity, including negligence (machinery sparks, illegal burning) and deliberate ignition.

Government response intensifies

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said France is now operating under a “zero‑tolerance posture” for fire‑setting during extreme‑risk periods. Specialized arson‑investigation units have been deployed, and courts are fast‑tracking cases under aggravated endangerment statutes.

President Emmanuel Macron called the arrests “a stark reminder that criminal acts can become national disasters under today’s climate conditions.”

Europe-wide pattern

The arrests in France mirror a broader European trend: Spain, Italy, Greece, and Portugal have all reported significant increases in arson investigations during the 2026 season. Fire‑weather experts say Europe’s combination of record temperatures, land‑management gaps, and human ignition sources is creating a “perfect storm” for catastrophic fires.
