FEMA to be phased out after 2025 Hurricane Season: More disaster responsibility on individual states

en

Washington, D.C. – June 11, 2025 – US President Donald Trump has announced plans to phase out the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) following the conclusion of the 2025 hurricane season.

The decision, revealed during an Oval Office briefing, aims to shift disaster response responsibilities to individual states.

Trump stated that federal disaster aid would be reduced, with funds distributed directly from the president’s office rather than through FEMA.

Concerns Over Disaster Response

The announcement has sparked concerns among state emergency officials, who warn that many states lack the infrastructure and funding to handle large-scale disasters without federal assistance. Critics argue that FEMA’s elimination could leave communities vulnerable, particularly as climate-related disasters grow more frequent.

Next Steps

A FEMA Review Council, co-chaired by Noem and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, is expected to submit recommendations in the coming months on how to reduce FEMA’s footprint and reform its operations.
