Creation of the Intergroup “Resilience, Disaster Management and Civil Protection”:
For a stronger, safer, and more resilient Europe
Brussels, 12/12/2024 – Grégory Allione, the first firefighter elected as a Member of the European Parliament and a member of the Renew Europe group, is pleased to announce the creation of the European Parliament’s Intergroup dedicated to civil protection: “Resilience, Disaster Management and Civil Protection.”
PRESS RELEASE FROM MEP GRÉGORY ALLIONE
Launched alongside his colleagues Pascal Arimont (EPP, Belgium), Christophe Clergeau (S&D, France), and Matej Tonin (EPP, Slovenia), this pioneering initiative aims to prioritize civil protection, disaster management, and resilience at the core of European policies.
For MEP Grégory Allione, the goal is clear: “This platform is a key step to bring visibility to the challenges of civil protection and resilience at the European level. It is a strong commitment to Europe’s future!”
The Intergroup will strengthen European coordination and preparedness for major crises—whether natural or technological—and promote better recognition of firefighters, volunteers, and other civil protection actors, while improving the protection of volunteers in their often-risky missions.
“With this Intergroup, we aim to support those who dedicate themselves daily to saving lives and protecting our territories. We strive to create a bridge between policymakers, experts, and field actors to advance European policies on civil and defense protection. Together, we will build a stronger, safer, and more resilient Europe,” concludes Grégory Allione, MEP of the Renew Europe group.
This historic first reflects a growing awareness within the European Union. It echoes the message of Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, in entrusting the portfolio for crisis preparedness and management to European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib. Civil protection must be a transversal and inclusive priority to ensure Europe can meet the challenges ahead.
