Europe battles explosive wildfire surge: Hundreds of thousands evacuated across Spain, France and Portugal

fr

MADRID / PARIS / LISBON — Europe is facing one of its most severe wildfire emergencies in recent years, with more than 200,000 people evacuated across Spain and France as fast‑moving fires overwhelm regional response systems, trigger military mobilization, and cause multiple aviation incidents in Portugal.

Spain declares national emergency as fires rage north of Madrid

Wildfires burning in the mountains north of Madrid have forced thousands of residents to flee towns and suburbs surrounding the capital. According to regional emergency officials, the fires cannot currently be controlled, with shifting winds pushing flames toward populated areas.

The Spanish government has declared a national emergency, and additional firefighting aircraft and ground crews have been deployed. The Telegraph reports that evacuations continued through the weekend as fire fronts expanded across parched terrain.

France evacuates more than 140,000; military mobilized

Southwestern France is experiencing an unprecedented evacuation operation, with over 140,000 people displaced due to large-scale wildfires in Gironde and surrounding departments. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said 44,000 hectares have burned since the start of 2026, “far more than everything that burned in 2025.”

President Emmanuel Macron has ordered the military to support civilian emergency services, a rare move underscoring the severity of the crisis. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened a late‑night government crisis meeting involving ministers for defence, health, transport, and environment.

On Wednesday evening, authorities evacuated 4,600 people from Gironde, followed by another 7,000 early Thursday from six campgrounds and a residential area — the latter described as a precautionary measure.

115,000 Hectares Destroyed in France

Around 115,000 hectares have been devastated by the fires in France, says the country's Minister of the Interior Laurent Nuñez, according to Le Figaro:

"Truly exceptional, far more than what we have seen before."

He also adds to France 2 that 30 to 40 fires are being fought simultaneously every day. Nuñez also says that the situation, particularly in Gironde, Landes, and Var, is "very unfavorable."

France deploys A400M water‑drop aircraft for first time in history

In a historic first, France deployed an A400M military transport aircraft equipped with a modular firefighting system, capable of releasing 20 tonnes of water or retardant. The aircraft was originally scheduled for operational debut later this month, but worsening conditions prompted an early deployment at the request of the prime minister.

This marks the world’s first operational use of the A400M’s firefighting module.

Portugal: Water bomber suffers scooping failure on Tagus River

On 16 July, a Canadair CL‑215 operated by Spanish company Avincis under contract with Portugal suffered a scooping‑maneuver failure on the Tagus River near Portas de Ródão. The aircraft remained afloat and its three‑person crew evacuated safely.

The incident echoes a similar July 2025 Douro River accident involving another Avincis CL‑215 (EC‑HEU) during takeoff. Aviation safety investigators are reviewing both cases for operational parallels.

Europe-wide evacuations continue

CBC reports that thousands have been ordered to evacuate areas outside Madrid, while Reuters notes that more than 200,000 people have been displaced across France and Spain combined.

Emergency services across Europe warn that extreme heat, drought conditions, and high winds are creating rapid fire spread and unpredictable fire behavior, complicating suppression efforts and stretching resources across multiple countries.
