"We can't serve others when we are depleted"

An important key note speaker was internationally renowned speaker Clara Capano, who spoke about how to foster a good mental health environment within first responder leadership.

Here is a summary of her her presentation:

Self-Care and Mental Resilience for First Responders: Leadership Starts Within

In a powerful presentation on operational health and resilience, fire service leaders were urged to redefine self-care, moving beyond simple relaxation to focus on genuine mental wellness, active recovery, and peer support.

The speaker stressed that self-care is fundamentally about protecting mental capacity so that personnel can continue serving others effectively.

"We can't serve others when we are depleted," she emphasized, noting that everyday practices—such as proper sleep and balanced nutrition—must be coupled with taking dedicated daily time for personal joy to combat burnout.

The 15-Minute Daily Reset: Leaders and first responders are encouraged to set aside at least 15 minutes each day to engage in activities that bring personal fulfillment, along with quick techniques like a "four-second reset" to establish immediate composure under stress.

Breaking Mental Health Stigmas: The presentation highlighted the persistent fear surrounding mental health reporting, where personnel often worry that seeking help will damage their permanent record or job security. Overcoming this stigma requires creating open, supportive environments.

Building Support Systems: Fire services must build long-term wellness structures, including peer groups, open discussion panels, and accessible therapy, making help-seeking acceptable and normal.

Operational Impact: Mental wellness directly enhances job performance by improving critical thinking, accelerating decision-making, and sharpening response times during high-stress calls.

A Call to Action: Attendees were challenged to take time to reflect on their own habits, assess their leadership approach, and build a personalized toolkit to support themselves and their teams.

Fostering a good mental health support culture in the fire service

Building a resilient workforce requires continuous investment in mental health. By fostering open communication, active listening, and strong peer support, fire service organizations can build an environment where asking for help is recognized as a necessary step toward operational readiness and personal health.
