CTIF renews Memorandum of Understanding with UITP

The Memorandum of Understanding between the International Public Transport Association (UITP) &the International Association of Fire and Rescue Services (CTIF) has been renewed as of October 25, 2021. 

The cooperation agreement between CTIF and UITP has been in place since April 2019. It revolves primarily around  bus safety, specifications on information for first and second responders in case of traffic accidents involving buses, and the promotion for their international adoption and usage. 

In particular, the MoU serves to spread information and help implement the various aspects of IS0 17840, which is an international vehicle rescue safety standard, the first of it´s kind focused on the safety of firefighters and the public during vehicle rescue. CTIF began creating the standard in 2012 and has since then given it to ISO.org for publication.   

This memorandum of understanding highlights the partnership and sets up the promotion and the use of the mechanisms of the ISO 17840 standard at international level. ISO 17840 defines the labels and the format and content of the Rescue Sheet & Emergency Response Guides for new propulsion energy buses. Its application allows access to information to help rescue teams to intervene when necessary by reducing the intervention time.

The primary objectives of this MoU are:

1. To raise awareness about the existence of the ISO 17840 standard and its relevance for the Public Transport Sector, by:

❖ Sharing information about the ISO 17840 norm with the members of the International Public Transport Association

❖ Encouraging the members of the International Public Transport Organization to applicate the standards, by for example using the symbols indicating the power source on public transport vehicles

❖ Encouraging the members of the International Public Transport Organization to include the request for Rescue Sheets and Emergency Response Guides in line with ISO 17840 in their tenders for the purchase of new public transport vehicles

 

2. Stimulate collaboration between the Public Transport Sector and the local first and second responders, by:

❖ Sharing information about emergency procedures, in order to enhance the safety of the public transport vehicle drivers, the users of Public Transport, as well as the first and second responders, in case of an incident.

Know before you approach!

Today, the propulsion energy type,  and other power sources inside of a vehicle are often not visible from a distance.

With more and more alternative fuels and propulsion systems entering the market, more knowledge and more preparation is necessary before approaching an accident scene safely than ever before.

In order address all new and existing safety hazards associated with road rescue and vehicle fires & accidents, CTIF has worked with ISO to create the international vehicle rescue safety standard ISO 17840.
