Swedish fire fighters in the spotlight

It is the first time ever that Sweden is the host to this highly expected CTIF event, and its application as organiser dates back to 1999. By doing so, the Swedish Fire and Rescue Service wished to draw public attention to these young people who voluntarily join youth fire brigades. There, they get an overview of rescue and fire fighting skills, leading many of them to eventually join the fire service. They also wanted to point the valuable complements that exist between their volunteer and career fire fighters.

How are Swedish fire fighters organised? The Swedish fire and rescue service comprehends 234 local fire and rescue brigades that are administered at local level. They are made up of some 5,000 full-time fire fighters, 11,000 part-time fire fighters and 3,000 volunteer fire fighters paid on call. Beside fighting fires, they also have the responsibility, the skills and the technical equipment to respond to all kinds of emergencies such as road accidents, chemical risks or floods. The Swedish Rescue Services Agency (SRSA) is a governmental agency that supervises these brigades and organises their training. It also aims at developing strategies and tools for fire and emergency services at national level, including fire prevention programmes. More on: www.raddningsverket.se

Youth fire brigades in Sweden The Swedish Youth Fire Brigade Association is a relatively young movement which became a national organisation in the 1990ies. Youth fire brigades in Sweden are non-profit associations where young people play an active part in the decision-making process. They value community spirit, the opportunity to make new friends, both at home and abroad, and to share their knowledge. They mainly focus on fire prevention activities and are much involved in informing the general public on how to avoid and limit fires and accidents. Around 1,000 young people from all over the country have now joined the Swedish Youth Fire Brigade Association.
