Firewise campaigns

The so-called "Firewise" campaigns were launched in the United States after the catastrophic fires that had occurred in Florida and California in 1985. They are managed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), who leads the CTIF US National Committee. The campaign’s objective is to develop strategies that reduce risk and loses from wildfire. Initially, the focus was on homeowners and firefighter safety but the scope has now widened to incorporate educating home owners and communities with a strong focus on community planning. The programme has now developed into five areas and local communities have raised $25m for the campaign. "Firewise"’s annual conference will be held in Tampa, Florida, in early November 2008.
